What to Look For

If you are interested in collecting Lilli Ann garments, or if you own Lilli Ann garments you wish to evaluate, a little research and legwork will help you make smart decisions. The best way to learn is through experience, as there are exceptions to every rule. But a few guidelines will help you start evaluating and decision-making.

Age can be a factor in determining the value and significance of a vintage garment, but the idea that any old clothing is valuable is a misconception - the age of a garment is only one piece of the puzzle. Additionally, it is not true that a garment will be more valuable the older it is. As trends and historical influences fall in and out of favor, garments from certain time periods will become more or less valuable. For example, at the time of this writing you could now purchase an Edwardian dress for considerably less than the price of a 1950s Lilli Ann suit.

To be particularly desirable, a vintage garment should also feature excellent Design - encompassing high-quality fabrics, eye-catching and attractive features, and fine craftsmanship. A garment that is very representative of cutting-edge design of its time is held in high esteem. Happily, the vast majority of Lilli Ann garments from the company's origins through the 1960s fit this description.

There's one more major factor that affects the value of a vintage item: Condition. Even on a 60-year old garment, a flaw as minor as a small mothhole or stain can dramatically deflate its value. Major, irreparable flaws can render an otherwise desirable garment unsalable. You must decide what kind of damage is acceptable to you, and carefully examine each item you consider to ensure that it conforms to your standard. If you are buying with the intention of re-selling at a later date, remember that many collectors are only interested in items that are flawless, or nearly so.
