What to Look For

continued

If you're ready to shop for Lilli Ann garments, here are some tips and pointers. Bear in mind that these are generalities based on current observations. Collectibles trends tend to be volatile, and your experiences and judgment may differ from mine.

Garments from the 40s and early 50s pre-date the company's nominal expansion to Paris - therefore, there will be no mention of Paris on the label - just San Francisco. These early garments, usually exquisitely tailored suits and coats, are some of the most sought-after.

Simple, solid-color coats from the late 50s and early 60s are among the most common Lilli Ann items to be found. They are fine quality, very wearable, and were made in an endless array of colors and textures, often with bright, contrasting linings. Selling for a fraction of the price a suit from the same era might bring, they are an excellent entry point for a new collector. If you are buying to re-sell, keep in mind that because of their abundance, they are generally not as sought-after as other garments from the same era unless they are in excellent condition and have unusual design elements.

Though 40s and 50s items are still the favorites of collectors, 60s Lilli Ann can also be very desirable. Look for representative 60s examples such as fur-trimmed pastel wool suits, mod-influenced coats, and dramatic cocktail suits with beading and embroidery.

The "Lilli Ann Knits" line was launched in the 1960s. These items feature bright colors and dramatic styling. They are relatively inexpensive on the resale market, and offer another good introduction to the label.

In general, Lilli Ann garments from the mid-70s and onward do not have much cachet for collectors, and should be priced accordingly. The quality of these garments tends to pale in comparison to older pieces, and the styles are more conservative and staid. Some of the better pieces from this era reference 40s and 50s vintage fashion. So if you happen across a particularly lovely piece, you may wish to keep it as an investment - though it's not valuable now, it may be someday.
